Royal Botanical Gardens - Trails Master Plan and Phase I & II Construction
In the mid 1990's the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington Ontario retained Ken and his former company to prepare a trails
master plan for their 3000 acres of land and their almost thirty miles of existing trails. The planning process required
careful attention to the natural resources under the care of the Gardens, consultation with user groups and other stakeholders
and a long term management plan for the future of the existing and recommended trails. The master plan was approved by the RBG
Board of Directors and direction given to proceed with the implementation of Phase I of the plan - the Grindstone Trail with a
budget of $450,000. An few years later Ken consulted to the Gardens on the construction of Phase II - the Woodland Trail which
was constructed by their own forces.
The work of both of these phases included the construction of major boardwalks to protect the sensitive landscape and to provide wheelchair access to otherwise inaccessible areas of the Gardens, the reconstruction of some existing trails and the decommissioning of others. The resulting trails help protect valued natural features and provide safe access for thousands of visitors a year.
